Instagram post 2191853671493621530_4780768974 Today I got my hair cut. It’s been a long time since I had my hair this short!

The years in between then and now represent a lot of learning, growing, and life experiences (and the grey hairs to prove it! 😆

This may not seem like a big change, but for me, it represents a lot. I guess it represents a new phase in my life.

I’m excited to share with you the things I’ve learned and synthesized, the realizations I’ve made, and continue to make about health, science, life, perspective, and more. It’s definitely a journey and a work in process!

For those who’ve followed me for a while, you’ve probably noticed my focus of my posts have changed and evolved, and continue to do so as I put my puzzle pieces together, and share what I learn and research, so that I can hopefully help at least one person along their own journey.

If I’ve helped inspire, educate, and motivate at least one person out there to find ways to improve their health and live their best life, then I’ve succeeded. 💛

Onwards to the rest of the journey! 😊
Instagram post 2191001875493461042_4780768974 This slide is all about summarizing the connecting thread behind several different inflammatory, immune, and other chronic diseases, which may not seem associated, but absolutely are.

Conditions like autoimmune disease, autoinflammation, allergy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), and endometriosis all have immune dysfunction as a main underlying issue.

That means that for whatever reason, the immune system and resultant processes are not working correctly. I’ll discuss common reasons in another post.

Whether the resulting problems are production of antibodies to self tissue and organs as we see in autoimmunity, exaggerated allergic responses, overproduction of inflammatory mediators, or under-reaction of the immune system, a dysfunction of the immune system is at the root of all of these conditions, AND MANY MORE.

Today i read an extremely interesting chapter by Dietert & Luebke on immune dysfunction from the textbook “Introduction to Immunotoxicity”. I’ll be sharing some of their observations in future posts.

A conclusion they made, and one I’ve been saying all along, is that it’s extremely important with all of these conditions to improve immune function and prevent immune dysfunction, instead of just trying to manage symptoms.

Some things that can help include reducing immune triggers, support optimal epigenetic function, and support the immune system in whatever way the individual requires depending on how the dysfunction is presenting.

Check out #endoimmune to read what I’ve already mentioned about how to manage some of these things

Sound like gobbledygook? I’m still processing this…keep watching, I’ll be distilling this information down.
.
❓ What do you think? Is this association surprising?

Instagram post 2190227103339856005_4780768974 Last week we bought in with some friends on 3 red stag deer from a “hunt your own” farm.

This past weekend was butchering time. Six of us got together to butcher and package the three deer, and it went so quickly with so many hands on board.

This meal was our reward for our productive day: Red Deer filet mignon and faux filet along with some delicious wild shrimp.

I used my melt-in-your-mouth sliced steak recipe on the faux filet. I’ve mentioned it a few times in my feed. The rawness might turn you off, but because of the unique cooking process and very thin slices, it’s truly delicious. Even people used to well done steaks enjoy this recipe. It truly melts in your mouth

The filet mignon also melted in my mouth. At 1.5 years, the meat from this animal is super tender. I’m grateful for every morsel.

If you ever get the chance to try Red Deer, I absolutely suggest you do. The taste is mild, and it’s so tender. Not to mention a very nutrient-dense meat.
.
❓have you ever tried it? What did you think? What’s your favourite way to cook it?
Instagram post 2188873270525214254_4780768974 This deliciousness happened: stuffed squash topped with goat cheese.

I threw an acorn squash in the oven for 45 minutes, then let it cool a bit. Meanwhile, I browned some ground venison, then added some sliced olives and tomato sauce.

Once the squash was cool enough to handle, I sliced it in half, scooped out the seeds, and filled the centres with the ground meat mix. Then topped with grated goat mozzarella.

I popped them back in the oven for 15 minutes, raising the temperature to broil for 2 minutes at the end. Voilà!

Super easy and super comforting. It’s low oxalate and low fodmap, and moderately low in carbs (squash does contain carbohydrates, 15 grams per cup of squash). For AIP cut the tomato sauce if you haven’t reintroduced, or use nomato sauce!
.
❓Have you made stuffed squash before? If so, what’s your favourite filling?
Instagram post 2188207487226758905_4780768974 This is a low-oxalate, low-FODMAP Starchy carb switch-out list.

If you’re already following low-carb, but looking to make sure you keep your oxalates and FODMAPs low to reduce inflammation, control immune flares, and reduce digestive trouble, then these options may be helpful for you.

If you’re not low carb, but you’re following AIP, the endodiet, you have an autoimmune condition, endometriosis, or chronic illness, then keeping your starch and sugar intake at a moderate to low level is likely a good idea.

WHY?

Insulin. It can trigger many things, including inflammation, endometriosis growth, immune reactions, and more.

When insulin spikes too much & too often, this is when we can run in to trouble, and not just for diabetics.

I see often especially in AIP, paleo and gluten-free communities lots of recipes that contain lots of starchy foods like sweet potatoes, plantain, cassava, and tapioca, or starchy gluten-free flour alternatives. Also lots of added sweeteners like maple syrup, honey, dates and other dried fruits, and fruit juice.

While all of these things are considered “natural”, they still spike insulin, and therefore are likely not helpful for you if you’re trying to control inflammation, immune flares, endometriosis flares, and trying to manage your weight.

So here’s a list that may be a helpful starting point, or may give you some ideas if you’ve been looking for some low FODMAP alternative to cauliflower pizza crust and cauliflower mash, or low-oxalate alternative to kale chips.
.
.
❓Do you have any other switch-out ideas to add? Sharing is caring!
Instagram post 2188089480987206730_4780768974 This is inspiration and all the feels. Watching @ketobarbelle do the work, and transform not only her body, but her mindset and her life is the most fulfilling thing.

Her message is gold and everyone should listen: “don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t heal, or that you can’t take your life back. Prove them wrong”

Yes yes yes! 👏 important and powerful message.

Work on what you want one day at a time, one step at a time. Know that sometimes there’s bumps in the road, and that progress sometimes looks like two steps forward and one step back, and that’s ok. You’re not right back at the beginning. And there’s always learning lessons in those steps that will make you stronger in the end.

A big congratulations to you, @ketobarbelle, for your much-deserved accomplishments. What a great job 😊
